Wonder & Reverence

Updated: Dec 22, 2018

The ninth gift is Reverence.

“May you appreciate the wonder that you are and the miracle of all creation.”

When was the last time you found yourself standing in awe?

Growing up in Oregon we had great opportunities to experience the wonders of nature, whether at the beach watching and listening to the waves roll in or standing on the bridge at Multnomah Falls watching the water dive over the edge and land in a pool below. I experienced that sense of reverence, respect and awe. I found myself enamored of how it all comes together to create such beauty.

I’ll never forget my children’s births. Miraculous. How they were knitted together in my wife’s womb. I remember listening to them before the were born. We read to them and expectantly waited for them. On that day as we rushed to the hospital, I was so excited but as the years have continued, I must admit, that I have found my awe waning. Bad attitudes, undone chores, disrespectfully words have led to a disconnect and loss of reverence for what God gave.

Irreverence is something we have become use to today. The way we talk to each other, to the way we think of each other, somehow respect has diminished. Maybe this diminished respect is because of the demystification of the world. We in our advanced understanding of science can now explain how it “all” works and so the world just isn’t so awe inspiring anymore. It could be the overwhelming amount of stuff we have to process; Facebook, emails, Snapchat, that makes the small moments of life somehow insignificant. I might say it’s since we have disconnected from the source of life and lost His purpose for our lives. Whatever your bend or bias I think you can agree that reverence seems to be a relic of the past.

I Pray that you will lock arms with me and dust of this old concept and begin a new to reverence the little miracles in your life. Take captive those moments, and do not let them escape your grasp. Breath, listen, watch, enjoy, respect, and reverence the life God has given you.
